Ukraine should focus on strategic objectives, and prepare for NATO membership, UNIAN reports citing Serhii Shutenko, Director-General of International Security Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, as saying at a press conference in Kyiv today.

According to Shutenko, political dialogue between Ukraine and the Alliance has strengthened over the last year, and the integration of Ukraine into the Euro-Atlantic security space continued.

“Collective security and NATO membership is our strategic goal,” said the representative of the Foreign Ministry. “We should focus not only on tactical purposes, which involve the conformity with criteria of transition to NATO standards and the reform in the defense sector, we need to look beyond the horizon, where the horizon is our membership in NATO. I believe that we need to talk about changes at this stage, and the changes will be tectonic, when the country becomes a member. These are changes in the architecture of Euro-Atlantic security, collective security, and we should have been preparing for it and talk about it,” said Shutenko.
