Ukraine took a decision to refuse its chairmanship in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) this year. Evgeniy Perebiynis, director of the information policy department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said this at a briefing.
“The Ukrainian side has decided to discontinue its chairmanship at the CIS in 2014,” said Perebiynis.
He also noted that CIS has recently become a “tool for implementing interests of individual members of the CIS, Russia in particular”.
He also recalled that due to the situation in Crimea, Ukraine insisted on a joint statement of CIS members condemning the aggression. Kyiv assumed CIS was basing on the principles of respect for sovereignty and inviolability of borders.
“Unfortunately, recent events witnessed the opposite”, said Perebiynis.
