The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has expressed its strong protest over the attempts by the Russian Federation to put Ukraine's nuclear facilities in Crimea and Sevastopol under Russia's national jurisdiction.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in its comment that the Russian side has been handed over a note, which stresses that all nuclear facilities and materials located on the territory of Crimea and Sevastopol are the property of Ukraine.
"Their legal status, operation and maintenance procedure are defined by Ukraine's legislation, as well as the provisions of the agreement between Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Association for the application of safeguards in connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons of September 21, 1995” – he said.
In addition, the Foreign Ministry recalled that placing nuclear weapons or military use of the nuclear materials and facilities is banned on the territory of Ukraine and Crimea.
"In this regard, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is warning the Russian side from engaging in any activities which will lead to the violation of a non-nuclear status of Crimea and the proliferation of nuclear facilities and materials under provisions of the agreement between the Soviet Union and the IAEA dated February 21, 1985," the Foreign Ministry said.
Crimea secede from Ukraine and joined Russia in March, the move that is recognized illegitimate by Kyiv and Western countries.
