Ukraine will not be able to achieve its goal of signing the Association Agreement with the EU without making real progress in the fulfillment of all EU requirements, in particular, without releasing former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko has said, reports Interfax-Ukraine.
"We see that today the Ukrainian government shows no willingness to fulfill all of the conditions for signing the Association Agreement with the EU. If President [Viktor] Yanukovych was really striving for Ukraine's European integration, rather than just saying he was, he would release Yulia Tymoshenko," the party's press service quoted Klitschko as saying at a meeting with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite in Vilnius.
He appealed to the Lithuanian president for the EU, when determining its final position, to take into account the fact that this agreement will provide the Ukrainian opposition and the EU with additional levers of influence on the Ukrainian authorities and create more favorable conditions for fair elections in Ukraine in 2015 and major reforms after the victory of a candidate from the democratic forces.
"Today the main task of the opposition is to do everything to ensure the fulfillment of the conditions and the signing of the Association Agreement. And then we will demand that the current authorities fulfill the provisions of this agreement. And we clearly realize that we will be able to implement fundamental reforms and truly European standards in Ukraine only after a change of government in 2015," Klitschko said.
The party said that in Vilnius, Klitschko would also meet with Lithuanian Parliament Speaker Vydas Gedvilas and Lithuanian MPs.
