KYIV (QHA) -

Ukraine intends to litigate and initiate arbitration against Russia to protect the rights guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which have been violated due to illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Lana Zerkal posted on Facebook.

The decision is provided by the decree of Ukrainian President to extend the mandate of the Ukrainian delegation, established in December 2014, to participate in the negotiations with the Russian Federation regarding a violation of its obligations under international treaties.

"This decision is aimed at ensuring the violated by the Russian Federation rights and interests of Ukraine, guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, in adjacent to Crimea territorial sea, the waters of the Black and Azov seas, and the Kerch Strait, including the rights to the natural resources of the continental shelf," Zerkal wrote.

She also added that the Foreign Ministry will soon initiate arbitration in accordance with the requirements of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
