Ukraine became member of UN Security Council

January 1 a decision taken by the UN states - members in a secret ballot came into force.

Friday, January 1, Ukraine became a member of the UN Security Council, reported the Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on Twitter.

- Today Ukraine has become a member of the UN Security Council. We know the value of peace and justice! wrote Poroshenko.

October 15, in a secret ballot 177 UN states – members, out of 177 countries necessary, chose Ukraine as one of the 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2016-2017.

The UN Security Council has 15 members: five permanent (China, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, United States and France) and ten non-permanent countries elected for a two-year term. Each member of the Security Council has one vote.

In some cases, the Security Council can resort to sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.
