The US presidential candidate with the Republican Party, Donald Trump said he is ready to recognize Crimea as a part of Russia, if he takes the presidency, reported The Washington Post.

Answering the question, "I would like to know if you became president, would you recognize Crimea as Russian territory. And also if the U.S. would lift sanctions that are?" he said:

We'll be looking at that. Yeah, we'll be looking.

The author of the article stressed that the Crimean issue is too important for the States to simply "look at" it.

And were Trump to actually consider it, you can bet it would make Russia very happy indeed, wrote the journalist.

According to The Washington Post, Trump’s statements are contrary to the official US stance, which recognizes the annexation of Crimea illegal.

Trump, though, left open the possibility Wednesday of simply recognizing Crimea as Russian territory and even perhaps lifting related sanctions, wrote the newspaper.
