Trial against the chairman of “Crimea Fund” organization Riza Shevkiyev to be conducted in Crimean Tatar language, which was declared state language along with Russian and Ukrainian languages. 

Shevkieyev’s lawyer, Illarion Vasilyev said this to QHA corresponded.

The trial had to take place Dec 16, still it was postponed till Dec 23, over Shevkiyev’s appeal to conduct the trial in Crimean Tatar language.

“We have submitted an application for conducting the trial in Crimean Tatar language, which, according to Article 10 of Crimean constitution, is one of the state languages of Crimea. The court should not just grant a translator, but hold the trial in Crimean Tatar”- Vasilyev said.

Vasilyev also noted, the judge, when postponed the trial Dec 16, said “I have to learn Crimean Tatar language”.

The trial should be conducted in Crimean Tatar. It is our right and we will exercise it- the lawyer said. It will be interesting trial to observe”- he added.

Nov 18, Crimean charitable organization “Crimea Fund”, where the central office of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people was located, was fined 4,5 mln rubles. The chairman of the fund Riza Shevkiyev was imposed 350,000 rubles fine.

Riza Shevkiev said he would appeal to European Court of Human Rights to challenge this decision.
