A resolution to rename the town of Dzerzhinsk to Toretsk, adopted at a session of the Town Council, has been submitted for consideration of the Verkhovna Rada.
“A resolution to rename the town of Dzerzhinsk has been adopted at a today’s session of the Town Council. Now it will have to be endorsed by the Verkhovna Rada,” reports LB.ua citing Yuriy Yevsyukov, Secretary of Donetsk Town Council.
Dzerzhinsk was named after Felix Dzerzhinsky, an early Soviet-era politician who was responsible for setting up the Extraordinary Commission charged with combating anti-Soviet forces. Toretsk is the name of the river the town lies on.
