Today, Ukraine may become UN Security Council member

Ukraine will be elected in case two-thirds of the UN state- members vote for its membership.

The UN General Assembly will elect five non-permanent members of the Security Council for 2016-2017 year. Ukraine is also among the candidates.

The procedure in the General Assembly is to start at 10 am (17:00 Kiev time). All 193 countries - members of the organization by secret ballot will elect candidates presented on the list for the regional groups.

According to the rules of the General Assembly, while electing non-permanent Security Council members' the attention is paid mainly and in the first place to the degree of participation of the UN members in maintaining international peace and security, achieving other objectives of the Organization, as well as equitable geographical distribution.

As previously stated by Pavel Klimkin, the Head of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ukraine, our country meets all requirements and has a greater chance for success.

Voting results are to be announced the same day.
