Zair Smedlyaev explained on Facebook why the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Crimea must not and cannot be prohibited on the Russia- occupied peninsula.

- Information for all our compatriots, Crimean Tatar symbols were not and are not forbidden! The Crimean Tatar flag is a historical flag of the Crimean Tatar people, and it has nothing to do with any public organizations. To prohibit it means to prohibit our people, its history, its culture, its existence! Wrote Smedlyaev.

He hopes that, despite all the harassment of the Mejlis and the Crimean Tatar people, the national symbols won’t disappear.

In November last year, the police officers tried to prohibit Zair Smedlyaev, Head of the Central Election Commission of Kurultay of the Crimean Tatar people, to carry the National flag to a football match between the Crimean Tatar teams competing for the prize of twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Amet-Khan Sultan.

Following the incident, the journalist Zair Akadyrov filed a complaint with the Russian Ministry of Justice and received the following answer:

According to the answer, as of 09.02.2016 the Crimean Tatar flag was not on the list of the extremist symbols.
