To further enforce sanctions introduced against Russia, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers banned all Russian airlines from crossing its airspace.

This is what Arseniy Yatsenyuk said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, UNIAN reports.

“We held consultations and analyzed our legislative acts. We expected Russia to cancel its decision banning Ukrainian companies from flying to and over Russia, but Russia rejected our legitimate requests. That is exactly why the Ukrainian government decided to ban all transit Russian flights across Ukrainian air space,” said Yatsenyuk.

According to Yatsenyuk, a ban for Russian military planes has already been put in place, so the today’s decision concerns Russia’s civil aviation.

“The decision came as result of the escalation of the military and geopolitical situation. Russia can use Ukrainian air space to stage provocations,” said the Ukrainian Prime Minister.
