Crimean Parliament has submitted to Russian Parliament amendments to the law on making Crimea a part of Russian Federation.

The document provides for renunciation of Ukraine’s citizenship for residents of Crimean by applying to Russian Migration Service.

It should be noted, that according to Ukrainian laws, the decision on involuntary termination of Ukrainian citizenship must be taken by the President of Ukraine.

The Black Sea peninsula seceded from Ukraine and annexed by Russia in March 2014. Following the annexation, Crimea residents were forced to take Russian citizenship, amid great amount of Crimeans wished to remain citizens of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russian law that criminalizes undeclared dual citizenship for Russian citizens has come into force in August.

On March 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law the documents officially making Crimea part of the Russian territory.
