In 2017, Russia plans to deploy the air assault battalion on the peninsula, on the basis of which the 3rd Regiment of the 7th Airborne Assault Division is to be subsequently formed, the media reported with reference to the Chairman of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee Vladimir Shamanov.
“Political decisions have been made to strengthen the defense capability of the Crimea. It is the combined arms unit formation that will largely provide complete stability of the land component. It was decided to deploy amphibious assault battalion in 2017, on the basis of which the 3rd Regiment of the 7th Airborne Assault Division will be formed with the place of permanent deployment in the Crimea,” Shamanov informed.
Moreover, according to the Russian parliamentarian, upgrade of the material and technical base of the Black Sea Fleet will play a significant role in strengthening the defense capability of the Crimean peninsula.
Earlier, December 27, 2016, Kyiv Pecherskiy District Court authorized the Chief Military Prosecutor's Office to withdraw the original Kharkiv agreements from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the extension of a 25-year basing of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea.
