The largest Russian airline company Aeroflot may fall into the sanctions lists in Ukraine, the US and the EU for the decision to introduce a new air route Sochi - Simferopol, since air traffic with the occupied Crimea is banned under the Ukrainian legislation and is a direct violation of the international rights.

The first flight on the specified route took place at 7.15 a.m. January 2, 2017, according to the Russian air carrier website.

Following the Russian annexation of Crimea in March 2014, State Aviation Service of Ukraine has decided to ban all flights over the Crimean Peninsula. At the beginning of April 2014, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has officially confirmed the Ukrainian aviation authorities’ control over the Crimean air space.

In April 2014, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation has banned flights to Crimea if they have not been agreed with the Ukraine.

December 29, 2014 the United States Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FAA) banned civil flights over Simferopol.

October 27, 2015 Federal Aviation Administration of the United States extended the flight ban for US aircrafts over the Crimea and eastern Ukraine until October 27,2016. October 25, 2016 the United States extended the ban on flights to US carriers in the airport of Simferopol for another two years with a view to safety.
