SARAEVO (QHA) -

Russia sought to oppose the process of accession of the Balkan countries to NATO through its embassies and special services, thereby interfering in their domestic affairs, according to journalistic investigation of an international association OCCRP.

The authors, referring to the documents of the Macedonian government, argue that Moscow was trying to achieve Macedonia's refusal from Euro-Atlantic integration and in fact to subordinate the state to the Kremlin influence.

“Russia, using the so-called "soft power" method, as part of its strategy in the Balkans, has set itself the goal of isolating the state [Macedonia] from the influence of the West," the article says.

Russia's foreign policy is closely connected to the energy strategy, which aims to control the strategic energy resources of the Balkan countries through partnership with them, the authors of the investigation further emphasize.

Over the past nine years Macedonia has been facing the increasing activities of Russian intelligence services, which work through diplomatic departments.

The investigation also notes that such activities of the Russian Federation were extended to other Balkan countries, while Serbia supported Russia in this process.
