WASHINGTON (QHA) -

Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and international terrorism are five major strategic challenges for the US, said the US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on the fiscal year 2017 defense budget request.

- Today’s security environment is dramatically different from the last 25 years, requiring new ways of investing and operating, said Carter.

According to him, Russia and China are the "most stressing competitors" since they continue increasing their military strength.

Pentagon expects to receive USD 582.7 billion in a base budget, 58.8 billion of which is intended for  overseas operations.
