Russia did not participate in an informal meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on March 31, says the statement by Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation in the organization, reports TSN.
The Russian Federation deems inappropriate for UN Security Council to consider human rights and freedom of press issues in Crimea after it became part of Russia:
“Human rights and freedom of press… do not fit within the scope of responsibility of the UN Security Council and the Council has no grounds for such discussions.”
“Such meetings undermine the reputation of the member countries of the Security Council and damage the prestige of the UN Security Council as a whole”, says the statement.
As reported, meeting of the UN Security Council on March 31 was held at the initiative of Ukraine and Lithuania.
The meeting is described by the Russian mission as “one more attempt to distract attention from the serious situation in Ukraine”.
“It (the meeting- ed.) obviously does not intend to give an objective assessment to the developments in the region, but to arrange a tendentious propaganda show,” concludes the statement of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation.
As informed, ex-head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Jemilev speaking at the meeting of the UN Security Council on March 31 called the referendum in Crimea “cynical” and “absurd”.
