Today, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the beginning of the surprise drills of the Southern Military District troops, the separate units of airborne troops and military transport aircraft.
“In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander, the troops of the Southern Military District, the separate units of airborne troops and military transport aircraft have become fully operational since 5 a.m. today. Since that time, we have launched a surprise combat readiness check of troops in the south western strategic direction,” Shoigu said.
He also noted that the readiness of the Southern Military District troops to respond to various crises situations will be evaluated during the inspection.
“It is necessary to work out the whole range of challenges faced by the governing bodies and armies, including the fight against terrorism, elimination of consequences of natural and man-made disasters, as well as to assess the maneuverability of the units in the course of marching when creating groups of forces,” zn.ua quotes Shoigu as saying.
He also says that it is necessary to check the readiness of aviation and air defense forces to repel enemy air attacks and protect important military and governmental facilities.
