Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin accused the UN experts and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) of incompetence.
The reason for the Russia’s representative statement was the report prepared by the organizations on the use by the Assad regime the banned chemical weapons in Syria, at least three times.
Churkin said that the report made by the independent commission of the UN experts is contradictory and unconvincing.
“We believe that there are no reasons for the indictments against the Syrian regime. The experts' conclusions are not convincing and have no legal grounds. Hence, the sanctions against the Assad regime will not be accepted,” he stated.
This is not the first time when the Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations protects the Assad regime, an ally in Syria. August 30, at a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, Vitaly Churkin, questioned the facts of chemical weapons use by the Assad regime that were set out in the report presented by UN and the OPCW.
August 24, the UN Commission of Inquiry found that the Syrian government and ISIS terrorists used chemical weapons in the 2014 – 2015 attacks on Syrian cities where mostly civilians lived.
