Moldovan intelligence reports that five Russian diplomats who were deported from Moldova in May are spies who recruited militants to participate in the armed conflict in the Donbas, Reuters reported citing a source in the government and two unnamed diplomatic sources.
Moldovan officials believe that Russians recruited militants from Gagauzia, who were sent to the paramilitary training camp in the Rostov region in the south of Russia before the fighting. However, the sources did not specify the number of militants or how they were recruited.
According to Reuters’ sources, the Security Service of Ukraine informed the Moldovan authorities about the recruited Gagauzes that were seen in the East of Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Defense and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to a request for comment.
