U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt thinks the option of swapping Ukrainian air force pilot Nadia Savchenko, who is being held in Russian custody, for Russian citizens, is ridiculous.
“The swap option is ridiculous. Savchenko has been held in remand in Russia illegally. Under the Minsk agreements, she must be released and this is the end of the [swap] discussion,” Ukrinform cites Geoffrey Pyatt as saying during ‘The US to Ukraine: Partner, Patron, or Ally?’ debate.
Pyatt also mentioned Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's proposal to exchange Savchenko for two Russian GRU officers Yevgeny Yerofeyev and Alexander Alexandrov.
It was reported earlier that Russia has come up with a list of Russian nationals it is prepared to swap for Savchenko. Among others, the Russian side is interested in swapping Savchenko for businessman Bout and pilot Yaroshenko, who are now serving lengthy prison sentences in the US.
