According to Putin, the Turks shot down a Russian plane trying to ensure the safe delivery of smuggled oil to Turkey from the ISIL-controlled territory.

- At the moment we have received additional information confirming that that oil from the deposits controlled by Islamic State militants enters Turkish territory on industrial scale. We have every reason to believe that the decision to down our plane was guided by a desire to ensure security of this oil’s delivery routes to ports where they are shipped in tankers, Putin said.

The Head of the Russian Federation asserts he told this story several presidents during bilateral meetings, and they got interested in it.

- All colleagues were listening attentively, and, as it seemed to us, the vast majority shares the idea that there was no need to down an unprotected strike bomber, which did not threaten Turkey in any way.

Obviously, Putin wanted to elicit sympathy from the audience. According to the Russian President, he is sorry for his country's relations with Turkey to have been spoiled.

- After all, I personally did a lot for their construction, Putin said sadly.
