President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin promised the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to further promote "the protection of state sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the country," according to Putin’s congratulation published on the Kremlin's website.

"Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russia will continue to render all possible assistance to the Syrian Arab Republic in the protection of state sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, in promoting the process of political settlement, as well as in efforts to restore the national economy," reads the message.

Earlier, QHA reported that Putin flew to the Russian military base Khmeimim in Syria and ordered the withdrawal of Russian military groups from Syria.
