Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Aleksey Yerkhov as Russia ambassador to Turkey. The decree of June 19 was published on the official Internet portal of the legal information of the Russian Federation.

At the moment Aleksey Yerkhov is the Director of the Crisis Management Centre of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, On December 19 Ambassador of Russia to Turkey Andrey Karlov was assassinated during his speech at the opening of the gallery at the Center for Contemporary Art. The ambassador died in the hospital due to severe wounds.

A police officer Mevlut Altyntash who guarded the ambassador at the event committed the attack. He was eliminated in a shootout with law enforcers. The Russian Foreign Ministry qualified the assassination of the ambassador as a terrorist act.
