Speaking at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine the President once again said that the Constitution of Ukraine ought to be amended, in particular, Article 10 in order to provide the Crimean Tatar autonomy to the indigenous people of Crimea.
- The issue of the de-occupation of Crimea stands next to the Donbas issue. Once again I want to stress that we must start introducing amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine, in particular it refers to Article 10 called the "Autonomous Republic of Crimea". These amendments ensue from the inherent right of the Crimean Tatar people to self-determination as a part of independent Ukraine, said the President.
Petro Poroshenko went on saying that this must happen only on the basis of equal rights and freedoms of Ukrainians and Russians living on the peninsula.
May 18, 2016 at the evening-requiem of memory of the Crimean Tatar genocide victims, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced the initiation of creating the Crimean Tatar Autonomy.
