Petro Poroshenko commented on the announcement of the dry hunger strike by Nadezhda Savchenko, a Ukrainian air force pilot, saying that Ukraine and he personally will redouble efforts to return her home, the Presidential press service reports.

“We will redouble our efforts to return Nadezhda back home. This is extremely important for me, for Ukraine and for each of us,” said Petro Poroshenko at the ceremony of presenting state awards to outstanding women, among them – combat veterans, volunteers, teachers and athletes.

The President called Savchenko’s feat heroic and her as a symbol of Ukraine and Ukrainians to the world.

“I have read her statement, which she intended to announce in the court. The iron will of the Ukrainian and not only the Ukrainian but an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who being up in arms did what should be done by every Ukrainian – was defending her homeland. Her staunchness and invincibility not only created an image, a symbol, but also provide her with strong support of our country. Today every Ukrainian is proud of the Ukrainian heroes and Nadezhda Savchenko is the most prominent among them,” Poroshenko said.

On March 3, the photocopies of Savchenko’s last statement were made public on her Facebook page, were she did not recognize his guilt, refused to appeal against the verdict of the Russian court and declared a dry hunger strike.
