President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko intends to request the introduction of peacemakers in the Donbas at the session of the UN General Assembly in New York in September. He made a corresponding statement during his speech in Severodonetsk, Lugansk region, on August 22.
“I'm going to suggest the idea of peacemakers next month in New York at the session of the UN General Assembly. Yes, the aggressor country is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and, unfortunately, has a veto power, but that does not mean that we should not strive for such a option," he said.
The President noted that he had discussed this need in the course of a telephone conversation with the leaders of the Normandy format on July 24.
"The matter of the UN peacekeeping mission and the OSCE armed mission is quite difficult in progressing. It all depends on the Russian Federation's categorical reluctance to establish peace in the Donbas, moreover, in its reluctance to leave Ukraine alone. But I'm sure that little strokes fell great oaks," Poroshenko stated.
August 22 around 22:00 Petro Poroshenko held a telephone conversation within the Normandy format. The planned topics for discussion with the leaders of the participating countries included the peacekeeping mission and the cease-fire in the Donbas from September 1.
