At a press conference held today in Kyiv, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, said that it is necessary to create the national autonomy of the Crimean Tatars in Crimea, although belatedly.

“I am sure that we had to do it for the Crimean Tatar people before. Everyone was afraid of the Crimean Tatars - I can honestly say that - all the Presidents and the entire Ukrainian authorities. It wasn’t Crimean Tatars they should have been afraid of! In fact, we shouldn’t have been afraid of anyone. We should trust the Crimean Tatars people - the outpost of Ukraine in Crimea,” he stated.

Poroshenko also outlined the first steps of this project.

“I made this decision after consultation with the Leader of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Jemilev and the Mejlis Head Refat Chubarov. The model will be such that goes through all the changes to the Constitution. I will prepare them and remit to the Constitutional Commission, which will include the representatives of the Crimean Tatar people. Then there will be careful consideration, discussion, signing and transfer to the Verkhovna Rada,” the President explained.
