Poroshenko instructed the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to file a lawsuit to initiate arbitration proceedings for violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea by Russia, the President’s press service reports.

Petro Poroshenko also noted that the Russian Federation had violated a number of laws, annexing Crimea. It is a violation of the rights of Ukraine for natural resources in the Black and Azov Seas, as Russia is stealing oil and gas, getting them on the Ukrainian territory. The construction of the Kerch bridge has also a negative impact on the ecology of the Black Sea basin.

According to Poroshenko, Ukraine has solid evidence legally confirming that Russia is stealing the resources and causing environmental damage to the said seas.

The President of Ukraine noted that international arbitration is intended to resolve such disputes, and expressed hope that Russia will not escape responsibility, as it was in the case with the tribunal regarding the crash of MH-17.

Poroshenko is sure that this process will allow Ukraine to restore full control over the sea, and compensate for the damage caused by Russian aggression and occupation of Crimea.

The President also noted that Ukraine will submit the appropriate actions in other international courts in connection with the annexation of Crimea, which has violated the property rights of economic entities of Ukraine. To this end, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine will be allocated more funds from the budget in 2017.
