KYIV (QHA) -

On the air of one of the Ukrainian TV channels President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko commented on the statement of the President of the Russian Federation at a press conference following the meeting with the US President Donald Trump about the "legality" of the annexation of the Crimea and on holding a "referendum".

The Head of Ukrainian state called Putin's words about the so-called legal referendum "ridiculous".

“Not the Ukrainians, not Ukrainian authorities and people, but they held a referendum. I think this is another convincing proof of the illegality of annexation.”

Earlier QHA reported that Vladimir Putin, after a meeting with the Head of the US, said that Trump did not recognize the annexation of the Crimea. Putin said that the Russian Federation believes the annexation of the peninsula was "in full compliance with international law with the Charter of the United Nations."

After the meeting of the US and Russian presidents, the US Senate called for increased sanctions against Russia. The strengthening of sanctions was made by the leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate Chuck Schumer.
