The Russian Federation is preparing the military infrastructure of the annexed Crimea for deploying nuclear weapons on the peninsula, in particular, restoring and modernizing former Soviet storage facilities for nuclear warheads, the Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrei Parubiy said at the meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly "Ukraine - Poland - Lithuania" in Warsaw.
“As for the nuclear weapon carriers (missile systems and aircrafts), they are already deployed on the peninsula. The Russian Federation is actually turning Crimea into a huge military base, with full Land, Air Force and Navy components," Parubiy said.
He drew the attention of the meeting participants to violations of the rights and freedoms of the peninsula residents by the Russian authorities, as well as to harassment of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar media.
Furthermore, the Head of the Verkhovna Rada highly appreciated the training that the Lithuanian and Polish instructors provided to Ukrainian military.
The Director of the Center for Army Studies, Conversion and Disarmament Valentin Badrak in his commentary to QHA said that the Russian importation of nuclear weapons in the Crimea is actually not an intimidation of Ukraine, but a threat to the West and the administration of the new US president in particular. According to the expert, thus, the Russian Federation intends to strengthen its positions in the region and close the issue of Crimea's de-occupation.
