In an interview with QHA, Zair Smedlyayev, Chairman of the Kurultay’s Central Executive Committee, shared the details of the April 7 hearing in the Mejlis case.
“A hearing got underway in Simferopol to determine whether to recognize the Mejlis a terrorist organization and, if found guilty, ban it in the Russian Federation,” Smedlyayev said.
According to Smedlyayev, security has been raised to an unprecedented level in and around the court building, with helmet-wearing and gun-wielding men being stationed all over the place. The armed men were soon followed by siren-wailing fire trucks.
“One can only wonder what caused them to step up security to such an unprecedented level. Perhaps, that way they are trying to ensure security of Zaur Smirnov, the so called ‘Chairman of Crimea’s State Committee for Interethnic Relations and Deported Citizens’? Being a witness for the prosecution, he promised to ‘be convincing enough to get the judges to recognize the Mejlis a terrorist organization,” Smedlyayev surmises.
It was reported earlier that a hearing in the Mejlis case due to be held at Crimea’s Supreme Court on March 17 was rescheduled for April 7.
