No mass rallies in the center of Simferopol on May 18: Mejlis

Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people have called off mourning rally May 18, commemorating 70 years since their deportation from Crimea.

The announcement comes a day after Crimean authorities banned all public gatherings until June 6.

"No mass rallies will take place in the center of Simferopol on May 18”- reads the statement on Mejlis’s official website.

Head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov called on Crimean Tatars to gather at religious centers and other locations.

 “In Akmechet rayon of Simferopol, at the area of local mosque, we will perform a prayer for victims of genocide of Crimean Tatar people. People, resident in Simferopol and nearby rayons, will attend the prayer. In with way we will together with our people. We will demonstrate that those who try to kill the memory of people are the biggest cynics in the world. We will never give our memory to be killed”- Chubarov said.

“For the first time Crimean Tatars face the situation, when they have to explain the authorities how important for society is to gather on certain day and pray for those who have died.”- he added.
