According to exit polls, Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Front is leading in the first round of regional elections held on Sunday, December 6.
Polling agencies predict that the National Front will score a victory in the second round of voting. The National Front is leading in six out of 13 regions and garnering nearly 30 percent of the national vote. The centre-right Republicans party led by former President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared to be in second place followed by François Hollande’s governing Socialist Party, Novoye Vremya reports.
The National Front is known for its support of the Kremlin’s policy, with its leaders being frequent guests in Moscow.
“It's a magnificent result that we will welcome with humility. We are without question, the first party of France,” Marine Le Pen said in her post-election speech.
The National Front is also rumored to have received financial backing from the Russian Federation for its recognition of Crimea’s ‘referendum’.
