German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Ukraine on August 23 at the invitation of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
Merkel will meet with Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk, focusing on the Ukrainian situation and relations with Russia, as well as ways to support Ukraine amid the crisis.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said Merkel's visit to Ukraine on August 23 this year was unusual.
"As for the chancellor's visit, it is an unusual visit, which is planned just before the national holiday. I want to emphasize that it is an unusual visit... The visit is the result of very close personal contacts of the Ukrainian president and the German chancellor... Knowing German political and diplomatic tradition, I can say that it's an absolutely unique fact," Klimkin said.
August 24 Ukraine marks Independence Day.
