French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, AFP has reported, citing Deutsche Welle.

During the conversation, they urged Putin to back negotiations between Kyiv and the eastern regions, envisaged by a peace plan of the Ukrainian president. In addition, Merkel and Hollande "called on all sides in the conflict to cease hostilities," the press service of the French president reported.

During the conversation with Putin, Merkel and Hollande also reiterated the importance of ensuring full control of the Russian-Ukrainian border in order to avoid infiltrations of equipment and armed men.
