(QHA) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she regrets that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has not signed an Association Agreement with the European Union, but stresses that Brussels's proposal offer remains in force.
She said this in Berlin on Wednesday, speaking in the Bundestag with a government statement ahead of the EU summit, Ukrinform reported.
"I regret that President [Viktor] Yanukovych decided - at least now - not to sign a far-reaching association and free trade agreement with the EU. But the proposal remains in force," she said.
The chancellor urged Kyiv to guarantee the right to demonstrations and to comply with other fundamental principles of democracy.
