Alexander Popkov - a lawyer of a Crimean Tatar Emir Usein-Kuku charged with terrorism argues that his client’s situation is a bright example of false fight of Russian Security Forces against terrorist threats.
The lawyer believes that all the charges against Kuku are proofless and base only on guesses and allegations.
- The man is tried in Crimea for non-public kitchen discussions with his two friends concerning transfer of something. I believe this is not a terrorist activity at all, Kurbedinov told a press conference "The cases against the Crimean Muslims: FSB exerts pressure on the detainees’ families for the kitchen talks about "terrorism".
Alexander Popkov went on saying that the fight against terrorism in Ukraine and Russia is very important, but only in case the threat is detected and neutralized.
- Fighting terrorism in Ukraine and Russia is a very important activity, but it is absurd and funny to assign to citizens such actions as terrorism, summed up the lawyer.
February 11 a wave of searches swept the Crimean Tatars’ houses in order to discredit them as "terrorists". Often the security forces acted aggressively – broke windows and forcibly took away people.
During the interrogation, the detainees were asked whether they or their friends are terrorists, whether they engage in any extremist organization and are going to Syria.
Eight of the twelve detainees have already been released, while Emir Usein Kuku, Vadim Siruk, Enver Bekirov and Muslim Aliyev are still being held in custody.
The detainees- Enver Bekirov, Emir Usein Kuku, Vadim Siruk and Muslim Aliev are socially active citizens. In particular, prior to being arrested Emir Usein Kuku was engaged in human rights activities and recorded human rights violations in Crimea.
