KYIV (QHA) -

Crimea can again return to Ukraine under the pressure of the international community, according to the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk.

He noted that one day Russia would no longer cope with the Crimea and hand it to Ukraine.

“For all the time, Ukraine has invested over 100 billion dollars in the Crimea. Although the Russians built a bridge there, but the Crimea requires colossal costs. The time may come when Crimea again can return to Ukraine under the pressure of the international community. This does not mean it can happen soon, as it may take a long time,” Kravchuk said.

The first President also commented on the theory that Crimea will return to Ukraine when the level of life in the country rises.

“But I do not believe the theory that if we live better in Ukraine, then the Crimea will return. First, I do not know when we will live better. Secondly, 78% of population there are Russians now. Therefore, we must look at the situation and think about what policy to apply in Donetsk and Luhansk, what a comprehensive policy should be in the Crimea. These regions will no longer be the same as they used to be, and we should remember about this,” he believes.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia does not intend to return the occupied Crimea to Ukraine and there are no such conditions that would contribute to this. According to him, an allegedly armed coup and seizure of power took place in the occupied Crimea, while the Russian army was deployed legally there, since the Russian military base was located on the peninsula.
