On this day in 1991 the majority of the Crimean people voted in the referendum for the restoration of the Crimean autonomy, the Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman wrote on his Facebook page.
“On this day, January 20, 1991, at the All-Crimean Referendum, most of the Crimean residents favoured the restoration of the Crimean autonomy, which determined the status of Crimea as part of Ukraine. Crimea is and will remain Ukrainian. Crimea is Ukraine!” He wrote
Reference: January 20, 1991, at the first in the USSR legitimate local referendum, the population of Crimea voted for the restoration of autonomous status of the peninsula.
February 12 Crimea officially received the status of an autonomous republic within the Soviet Ukraine.
