LONDON (QHA) -

The UK condemned the opening of the bridge over the Kerch Strait between Russia and the annexed Crimea by the invaders, according to the statement by the Minister of State for Europe and the Americas Alan Duncan, published on the website of the Government of Great Britain.

“Crimea is part of Ukraine, and its annexation by Russia is a breach of international law. The opening of this bridge represents yet another violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, and a further example of Russia’s reckless behaviour. We continue to work with partners to oppose the annexation, including by maintaining a robust package of sanctions," reads the statement.

The statement of the Minister for European and American Affairs further notes that the UK is concerned about the human rights situation in the occupied Crimea.

“The UK also remains deeply concerned by the human rights situation in Crimea, where we have seen the systematic persecution of minority groups and of those who voice their opposition to Russia’s illegal annexation of the territory. We call again for Russia to release all Ukrainian political prisoners held in Crimea and in Russia, and to allow unrestrained access for international human rights monitoring bodies to the peninsula.”

QHA reported that the US State Department commented on the opening of the Kerch bridge. The State Department noted that the opening of the Kerch bridge indicates Russia's readiness to violate international law.

Earlier, the EU also condemned the construction of the Kerch bridge. The statement of the EU representative said that having built the Crimean bridge, Russia once again violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Representatives of Brussels stressed that the purpose of building the bridge is further forced integration of the illegally annexed peninsula with Russia and its isolation from Ukraine.

Yesterday, May 15, in the annexed Crimea, the Kerch bridge was solemnly opened with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The head of the invader-state got behind the wheel of a truck "KAMAZ" and headed a column of trucks.
