Sentsov has been found guilty of staging terrorist acts in Crimea following the peninsula’s annexation by Russia - a charge that he denies.
Court hearings in the case started in Rostov-on-Don in late July. Back then, Gennadiy Afanasyev, one of the key witnesses, withdrew his earlier testimony against Sentsov claiming it was forced out of him.
During a court hearing held in Rostov-on-Don on August 6, 2015, Sentsov also claimed to have been tortured by being punched, kicked, clubbed and strangulated. The filmmaker referred to the court trial as an ‘occupant trial’ which ‘cannot be fair by definition’.
