During the rally outside the Supreme Council of the Crimea on February 26, 2014, pro-Russian activists deliberately thwarted all attempts to calm the situation. Due to of the noise, the rally participants could not hear what the mufti, the spiritual leader of the Muslims of the Crimea, and the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov were saying, the lawyer Nikolai Polozov reported on the results of the first part of the interrogation of an eyewitness of the events in Simferopol.
“Members of the Mejlis raised their hands up, waved and crossed them over their heads. These gestures could be unequivocally interpreted as appeals to calm down, to be quiet. At the same time, there were loud chants from pro-Russian protesters, which muffled both the Mufti and Refat Chubarov," the lawyer said, citing the witness.
