KYIV (QHA) -

Ukraine has several options for using Putin's statement on holding a "referendum" in the Crimea, political expert Yevhen Magda told QHA.

According to him, the first option is to draw the attention of the world mass media to the statement of the Russian president regarding the "referendum" in Crimea made during the joint press conference of Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

"The second is to attach the transcript of this press conference to documents that Ukraine can provide to the court as an evidence of the Russian occupation of the Crimea and Russian interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine," he said.

According to Magda, this will be the most correct option in this situation.
Magda recalled that Ukrainian law forbids holding a referendum on the territory of Ukraine.

The expert noted that the world public will pay attention to the statement of Vladimir Putin, if Kyiv will keep this topic on the agenda.

Earlier, Verkhovna Rada Vice-Speaker Irina Gerashchenko said that Ukrainian diplomats and lawyers should use the words of Vladimir Putin, delivered at a press conference in Helsinki, about the organization of the so-called "referendum" in Crimea in 2014 by Russia when preparing suits in international courts.

According to her, the master of the Kremlin has actually recognized that the Russian Federation stands behind an illegal referendum in the Crimea.

QHA reported that Ukrainian scholar, Doctor of Juridical Science, Professor Oleksandr Merezhko commented on Putin's statement. According to him, Putin's recognition that a "referendum" was held by Russia in the Crimea is enough to talk about his illegitimacy.

Putin in his turn said "we believe that we held a referendum in the Crimea in full compliance with international law."
