The EU countries have not taken a decision on the continuation of economic sanctions against Russia imposed for the annexation of the Crimea and the support to the pro-Russian separatists in Donbas, reported Euronews.
Since the action of ongoing sanctions expires Jan 31, 28 EU ambassadors had to take decision on their renewal Wednesday, Dec 9.
However, Italy has demanded to hold political debate on the extension of sanctions against Moscow. Therefore, Luxembourg, being a EU member, withdrew from the agenda the issue on sanctions against Russia.
Reportedly, today, in Rome, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is to meet Italian Foreign Minister Sergio Mattarella. The talks on the extension of sanctions against the Kremlin will continue at the meeting of EU foreign ministers Dec 14 or at the EU summit Dec 17-18.
