NEW YORK (QHA) -

The European Union does not recognize the holding of presidential elections in Russia on the territory of the occupied Ukrainian Crimea, the Head of the EU in the UN João Vale de Almeida stated during a special meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Crimea.

"The European Union also does not recognize the holding of elections by Russia on the territory of the peninsula," he said.

The EU Head at the UN stressed that the EU condemns the construction of the Kerch bridge, which is taking place without the consent of Ukraine.

He further noted that the European Union supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

QHA reported that on March 15 the UN Security Council held a special meeting in the Arria format, dedicated to holding illegal presidential elections in Russia on the annexed Ukrainian peninsula.

Speaker of the Ukrainian representation Oleh Nikolenko said that the meeting was initiated by Ukraine. The purpose of such a meeting, he noted, is to obtain information from a wider range of sources.
