EU is ready to ban Russian airlines from flying over Europe if Russia imposes ban on European airliner flying over Russia, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Germany Richard Kühnel said this to Deutsche Welle.
“EU is ready to ‘turn the screws on Russia’ and give ‘tit-for-tat’. We have no choice”- Kühnel said.
He also stressed that air corridors are determined by international agreements, which Russia should stand by. If it takes unilateral measures it will violate international law.
Kühnel’s statement comes after Russian business daily Vedomosti reported that Russia may restrict or ban European airlines from flying over Siberia on Asian routes in response to the European Union's latest sanctions over Ukraine.
To recall, Russia's low cost airline Dobrolet was forced to suspend all flights, after the EU imposed tough sanctions on the carrier.
