At this time the Crimean journalist Nikolai Semena is under house arrest, Hugues Mingarelli reminded, speaking at the conference "The Safety of Journalists in Ukraine."
“We are very excited about violation of freedom of speech in Crimea. We all know that journalist Nicholai Semena was placed under house arrest only for his calls to violate the territorial integrity of Russia. It certainly looks like a joke,” said Mingarelli.
He emphasized that the Crimean Tatar journalists are persecuted in Crimea as well.
“They are a special target and we know that the searches of their homes are carried out. This must be stopped, and we must also make every effort to stop this practice,” he said.
As QHA reported earlier, during mass searches in Crimea this spring, a criminal investigation was launched against Nikolai Semena, a freelance correspondent of Radio Liberty, on suspicion of calling for violation of the territorial integrity of Russia. Thus, he was forbidden to leave the peninsula.
