Investigative Committee has summonsed first deputy head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Nariman Dzhelal for questioning about the Feb 26 pro-Ukrainian rally, which took place more than a year ago in Simferopol, head of Kurultay Central Electoral Commission Zair Smedlyaev told Crimean News Agency.
This comes days after Ilmi Umerov, recently elected Mejlis deputy head, was questioned on March 23 by the Investigative Committee’s ‘department for particularly important cases’ as a witness on the same case.
Umerov said that he was questioned about Mejlis deputy head Ahtem Chiygoz and his role in the Feb 26 meeting.
“When I was asked about Ahtem, I said that I caught sight of him several times on Feb 26, and each time he was trying to calm people, not escalating the situation”- Umerov said, adding he was ready to testimony at law on the issue of the Feb. 26 rally.
Ahtem Chiygoz imprisoned since Jan 29 on charges laid under Russian law although pertaining to a demonstration held before Crimean unification with Russia.
Chiygoz is accused of “inciting interethnic hatred” during the rally of Feb 26, 2014, when thousands of Crimean Tatars gathered at the Crimean Parliament to show their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
